Second Life, also recognized as SL, is an Internet-based virtual world developed by Linden Lab (Linden Research, Inc) and released in 2003. Second Life was inspired by Snow Crash, a novel by writer Neal Stephenson who is known for his science fiction work which focuses on technological developments in near future society. There have been over 8.5 million SL accounts registered but it remains unclear how many of these accounts remain in use.

Second Life differs from most internet games since there are no winners or losers, no leveling system, points, or scores. Linden Lab created a user-defined virtual world of general use where people, known as Residents, can do business, create and trade items and services, play, and interact through motional, customizable avatars. The currency in SL is Linden Dollars which can be exchanged for real money in the marketplace. The Second Life marketplace is made up of Residents, real life companies, and Linden Lab. The SL exchange rate fluctuates depending on the game economy but is usually around one US dollar to every 250 Linden Dollars.

Resident can own up to 512 m land without any fees but Residents owning larger areas of land will incur an "Land Use Fee" or "Tier" which can range anywhere from a few US dollars to $195 US a month for an entire Region. Linden Lab previously sold land to new resident at reduced prices but stopped the program when most of land was resold at a profit rather than kept by the new Resident. Players can also own a Private Estate which consists of one or more Private Island or Regions. Each private region costs $1675 US and an additional $295 US monthly fee. Groups of people cannot join together to purchase a Private Estate but rather the purchase has to be made by only one person. This person, however, can appoint Region or Estate Managers. Even if the owner of the Private Estates sells land to a Resident and then takes back the land, Linden Lab will not interfere since the owner that originally purchased the land is solely responsible for the land and the land fees as far as Linden Lab is concerned.

One feature that makes Second Life so unique is that Linden Lab does not create the contents of the virtual world, but is instead created by the Residents themselves. The players use 3D modeling tools which allows them to create virtual buildings, vehicles, machines, furniture, and landscape that can be sold, traded, or kept for own personal use. Second Life uses a scripting language which is used to add autonomous behavior to SL objects such as a door that opens when a Resident approaches. Much like in the real world, Residents may retain a copyright for the SL items that they create.

In Second Life there are numerous in-world businesses and user-groups created specifically for the game but there are also many real world companies that have taken an interest in the game. Dell sells PCs in Second Life and American Apparel opened a branch inside SL and is selling digital renderings of clothing that are modeled after real-life merchandise. In 2006 Harvard Law School offered a course called "CyberOne: Law in the court of Public Opinion" within Second Life. Toyota offered a virtual replica of the Scion xB, and ABN AMRO Bank opened a virtual Second Life branch for the Residents.
